The largest green hydrogen plant in Europe is currently under construction at the Tweede Maasvlakte in Rotterdam. The plant will be named Holland Hydrogen 1 (HH1) and is expected to be operational in the second half of this decade. From that moment on, the 200 MW electrolyzer will produce an average of 60,000 kilograms of renewable hydrogen per day. The renewable electricity for this will come from the offshore wind farm Hollandse Kust Noord, which is partly owned by Shell. De Kok Staalbouw is working on the hydrogen plant on behalf of Visser & Smit Bouw. The total project will involve around 3,000 tons of steel structures.
“The main building is a heavy and robust steel structure of approximately 1,500 tons, with large trusses. Additionally, we have provided the full engineering, supply, and installation of about 4,000 m² of roof and wall cladding for this building, as well as various additional construction components,” says Lonneke de Kok, Junior Project Leader at De Kok Staalbouw. “We are currently working on the realization of a steel structure of approximately 850 tons for the cooling water building.” In addition to these structures, De Kok Staalbouw is also responsible for various crane tracks, monorails, pipe racks, pipe supports, and various auxiliary buildings. To ensure that all parties can carry out their work properly, safely, and without hindrance, they were involved early in the engineering process. Moreover, larger components, such as pipe racks, are pre-assembled in the laydown area. After the installation of the pipelines and systems, De Kok Staalbouw will take care of the final assembly, and the bridges will be lifted to their final location.
To manage all the work smoothly, De Kok Staalbouw works closely with Shell, Visser & Smit Bouw, and their partners, says De Kok. "The hydrogen plant is continuously evolving, and the same applies to the engineering; it is a dynamic process. Thanks to the flexible deployment of our team, we can respond effectively to this. This is precisely what makes our work so enjoyable! At the moment, the construction site is becoming increasingly crowded, making good collaboration even more important. The assembly is progressing excellently, thanks in part to our detailed work plans and joint preparations. We hope to complete our work by the end of 2024."
