In April 2024, De Kok Staalbouw was awarded the contract by TATA Steel Europe to construct the steel structure for the PeFa DeNOx installation. This environmental installation represents one of the most significant milestones in the Roadmap 2030 Plus improvement program.
De Kok Staalbouw was responsible for the design, production, delivery, and assembly of the entire steel structure.
With a total height of 75 meters, it was decided to minimize work at height as much as possible. Large components were therefore prefabricated and assembled at ground level, after which they were hoisted into their final position in a fully assembled state.
Because the structure is subject to fatigue, extremely robust connections were used, incorporating high-strength preloaded bolts of class 10.9. These were combined with a special zinc-silicate coating applied to the contact surfaces. The main columns were fabricated from built-up plate sections with an impressive thickness of 100 mm, made from steel grades S355 and S460.
In addition to the main structure, De Kok Staalbouw also produced several auxiliary buildings, including support structures for piping systems, a stair and elevator tower complete with sandwich cladding, and a catch structure for the adjacent polishing tank.
This installation plays a crucial role in reducing NOx emissions and in the pre-treatment of iron ore into pellets for the blast furnaces.
TATA Steel expects the project to be completed by the end of 2025.
